Beach Park SunsetDetails
As you watch the sunset from a peaceful Hawaii beach park you notice the purple hues in the clouds over the Island of Lana’i in the distance, the vibrant colors of the changing leaves on the trees shading the yellow lifeguard stand and the perfectly placed coconut tree above. It is then that you realize this is paradise and a scene you never want to forget.
The honu, or Hawaiian green sea turtle, is a sacred and beautiful animal found in Hawaii. Honu symbolize good luck, safe journeys, endurance and good health. Honu are mentioned in ancient Hawaiian chants and their images are found in petroglyphs throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Honu can be up to five feet in length and weigh hundreds of pounds. They can hold their breath for hours in the water but like to spend time resting and basking on the beach as shown in this classic photograph. Honu are a genuine symbol of Hawaii.
Honu in MotionDetails
This stunning piece shows over a dozen endangered green sea turtles (honu) moving in and out of the ocean while the waves wash across the beach. A surfer rides the waves in the background to complete this breathing Hawaiian scene.
Monk Seal GazeDetails
This close up of the beautiful Hawaiian monk seal was taken on a north shore Maui beach. This seal was resting on the beach for several hours before opening her eyes for the camera a few precious seconds. The vibrant green on her fur is actually the result of algae growth in her coat. It is very common and does not harm the seal – but it does add an amazing color!
Thousands of feet above sea level, on the slopes of the dormant volcano of Haleakala, lies a mysterious forest. While the 10,000-foot summit of Haleakala is known for frequently being above the clouds, the forest below is often shrouded in dense fog held from the summit by the unusual air currents and pressures created by the rising mountain. The fairy-talelike scene is simultaneously both eerie and beautiful, generating feelings of awe and wonder as your imagination creates the world beyond the fog.
As you await the sunset on a relatively clear day in Hawaii, you wonder if you will see the spectacular colors Hawaiian sunsets are known for, or if the sun will simply sink below the horizon as the sky begins to undramatically change from blue to gray. Then to your amazement and delight, as the sun descends below the Island of Lana’i in the distance, the barely noticeable stratus clouds in the sky light up in a display of purple hues, creating a dramatic backdrop for the palm trees and ocean before you, while you relax and enjoy an evening in paradise.
A magical site along the “Road to Hana” on Maui are the Rainbow Eucalyptus groves. As the bark on the trees matures each year a veritable rainbow of colors appears before the bark falls away, revealing the bright green inner bark.
A short distance off the “road to Hana” on the island of Maui is a small waterfall along the Waikamoi stream that is a favorite spot for visitors and locals. Continue the journey for another few hundred feet beyond these initial falls, to a spot few visit, and you will be rewarded with the spectacular big cousin of the first falls—Waikamoi Falls. This spectacular waterfall careens down the cliff side into a beautiful pool next to a magical cave. See this breathtaking piece of Hawaii fine art.
