Winters in Hawaii bring in the big ocean swells and giant waves. Wave heights on the north shores can easily exceed 30′ and have reached heights of nearly 100′ in places like Pe’ahi, or Jaws, on Maui. The waves can present challenging surfing opportunities for big wave surfers but for most of us they just provide an awesome display of nature’s power that we can watch safely from a beach.
The photographs in this gallery where taken at Ho’okipa Beach Park on Maui, only a couple of miles from the notorious Jaws beach in early 2022 as the first big swell of the new year moved across the islands.
