The Hawaiian Islands do not contain metal in the ground, so the ancient Hawaiian’s made everything out of wood, bones, rocks, animal teeth, shells and other items found in the ain’a (land). When the Europeans arrived, they would often trade iron nails for food and other items from the Hawaiian people.
