Hawaiian Words To Know
‘Ono: This Hawaiian word, written exactly as shown with the ‘okina (see last month’s newsletter), means delicious. There is also a slang variation you may hear in Hawaii – “onolicious” which combines ono and delicious. The word “ono,”without the ‘okina in the beginning, refers to a type of fish known also as a mackerel. Perhaps the next time you visit Hawaii you will have some ‘ono ono! Ono and ‘ono are perfect examples of why proper use of the ‘okina is vital in the written Hawaiian language.
