Honu (Green Sea Turtles) On A Hawaiian Beach

We hope you enjoy these images of this iconic symbol of Hawaii, the Green Sea Turtle or Honu in Hawaiian. Honu can be found on all Hawaiian Islands and the surrounding waters and come up on the beaches to rest. As you walk the beaches of Hawaii you may see a single honu or dozens together. In the attached photographs there are over 60 honu on a single Maui beach! According to the Maui Ocean Center, “They are the largest hard-shelled sea turtle in the world, reaching lengths of four feet and weighing over 300 pounds. Out of the seven types of sea turtle, the Hawaiian green sea turtle is the most common in Hawaiian waters.”

Always remember to stay at least 10′ from honu on land and do not block their entrance or exit area in the water.

Honu are very respected in Hawaiian culture and symbolize good health and safe travels among other things. There are three honu in the Hawaiian Experience Spa logo, each representing a point from our Spirit of Aloha Commitment.
