Ali’i: In ancient Hawaii, ali’i where the chiefs or the ruling class.
The ali’i nui where the great chiefs and sometimes controlled entire islands, while the lesser chiefs controlled smaller sections. Marriages would usually remain with the same class with ali’i and commoners rarely joining. At the spa we refer to our managers as ali’i and the spa managers as ali’i nui. All of the staff as a whole are referred to as ‘ohana which means extended family. In Hawaii you see the word ali’i frequently in street names, business names, boat names and more.
